iBook will not start, no chime just fan noise?

Upon pressing start button, no chime, just a continuous almost-white noise, I can feel the fan running air out the back, and thats as far as it goes, if I close the lid fan continues to run. Have tried changing hard drive thought it may have packed up. Thanks for any advice.

Please be a bit more specific. What's the history of the machine? Did you drop it or did it suffer a spillage? Why did you change the hard drive? Will it boot in target mode?

More details please.

The machine developed this noise, which I suspected to be the hard drive, I now think it to be the fan. It did at first boot in target mode and behaved, then on restart I got no chime just noise with fan running, upon closing the lid the fan keeps running, to stop it I have to pull the plug. There has been no spillage, has not been dropped. Thank you for your interest.

Chosen Solution

First remove the battery and AC adapter. Press the start button for five seconds. Replace the AC adapter and give it a try. Reseat the RAM. Remove the hard drive and try starting up from the system installation disk. Let us know of any changes or anything that works. Thanks

Apologies for the delay getting back to you, tried all you suggested, no change, now with the hard drive removed there is no fan noise, seems completely dead.

You do have the AC adapter plugged in? Are you getting a light on it?
