Clicking the center button doesn't work any more

I can turn my ipod on and scroll up and down and even turn it off but the center click will not let me select a menu item such as shuffle - it works fine when controlled by my car stereo but clicking the center button just doesn't work any more - can this be fixed easily

Not really, because the center button actually pushes a button on the logic board. Take your iPod apart and remove the click wheel. take a look at the center switch and push it with your finger, see if it feels the same as the rest. there is a little rubber pad on top of those switches, it may just have slipped of and your switch still works. If not, then it would be time for an new logic board.

I have the same problem with the center button. If I press it hard and for few 5 or 6 seconds it will work and it will work for a few times after that before I have to press it in hard again. Everything else works fine on it. I heard of a problem where the battery swells after it has been charged a lot. The swelling battery causes the center button to detach from the logic board.

The battery is located below the logic board. If it would swell, the only place that it would apply pressure to, is the LCD. It is not anywhere near the center button. Check the pad on top off the center switch and see if it is still in close proximity with the centre button from the click wheel.
