iPhone says searching and Randomly shuts Down After Water Contact/drop

Hello. My younger brothers phone fell of the back of my truck after he had left it on there. It landed on the road. It was left outside on the road for a few days before being found by a neighbor. It had been in contact with water. iPhone shuts off randomly every few minutes. Also phone says searching for data and the cellular data does not work and it says Cellular update failed. . Please give me ideas. I will be opening it up shortly to see if there is anything obvious on the inside.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank You!

This will not be a simple process as the baseband or and its circuitry have been damaged.

1)      Disconnect the battery as soon as possible.

2)      Take the board out of its housing.

3)      Remove all the shields from the logic board.

4)      Make a note of where the water went.

5)      Clean the board with Isopropyl alcohol.

6)      Put the board back into its housing.

7)      Put another good battery in and see if it boots without restarting every few minutes.

Check cellular functions. If it is still searching for data I don’t think there is much more you can do but get it looked at by a repair shop.

Could you please elaborate on how the shield and how to clean the board. Thanks.

We cannot tell you how to remove the shields as we don’t know what equipment you have. Removing the shields can be risky for someone who has not removed them before as the CPU, Baseband and other RF components live under them. Too much heat can cause dire consequences. Look on YouTube for different ways of removing them with the tools you have. After removing the shields follow Oldturkeys guide links.

@xtwiand for now you want to stop continuing to try to charge, sync or otherwise use your phone. This potentially can make a bad situation worse. This may further damage your phone.

The next thing to do is to clean it. Disassemble your phone using these guides . You must remove all EMI shields. If you do not remove those, you might as well not do anything. After you removed those, clean the whole board, connectors and all with +90% isopropyl alcohol. Follow this guide , and even so it was written for an Apple iPhone 3G all the points are still pertinent to your phone. While you clean your board, check for any obvious damage, like burned or missing components etc. I can not stress the importance of a good cleaning enough, so do it over and over while replacing the alcohol after each cleaning. Do not use compressed air for the cleaning since that can drive liquid as well as corrosion particles into areas that will cause trouble later on. Best thing to do would be to clean it with an ultrasonic cleaner, but if you do not have access to one, this will at least help. Once all this is done, reassemble your phone and reevaluate. When it is properly cleaned, replace the battery. All these steps are to avoid delayed failure caused by corrosion. Until it is cleaned, everything will only be a guess. Even with all this, water damage has only a small chance to be fully repaired, but at least you can give it a try.
