What is the best SSD for upgrading a factory APPLE SSD SM0256F?

I would like to upgrade the 256 GB SSD that came default in a Macbook Pro Retina 13” Mid 2014 . I am hoping to upgrade to either 512 GB or 1 TB. As of 2019, I am wondering what the best options might be for price and speed. Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks.

Here’s a good source on the different custom Apple SSD’s The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs The SSPOLARIS drives are the best Samsung custom Apple SSD’s. Both OWC and Transcend are good drives but slower than the SSPOLARIS drives.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your response. Are the SSPOLARIS the original apple ssds? In other words, is it only purchasable through second-hand markets like ebay? Or is there a place I can buy them? I have also heard some stories about OWC Aura Pros dying and giving issues. Is this substantiated? Thanks!

Here's one source SSPOLARIS

Thanks! What makes the SSPOLARIS faster than the OWC or Transcend Drives? Is it due to proprietary connections In other words, do OWC/Transcend use something like adapters?

This can get quite deep. The simplest answer is Apple contracted with the leading SSD maker to make their custom SSD using the best tech possible.

Thank you. I am wondering if you had any thoughts to Crucial drives, like the one here https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-1TB-NAND-... for $100. It seems compatible, but is the reason its priced like that because of its slow speeds? Thanks
