Is the screen on or off?

First, check your connections and make sure that you arent just receiving a blank input.

If you have picture and no sound, it is probably a bad capacitor causing a short somewhere on the picture board. My suggestion would be to simply replace the picture board by opening up the tv and writing down the model number.

@tapeye I am sure it can unless you have trouble with the panel. Bad capacitors are luckily not as common as they once were. In your case you want to go ahead and turn your TV on. Then in a darkened room shine a flashlight beam at an angel against the screen. See if you can make out shapes and silhouettes. If you do, you know it is the backlight that is an issue. Most common error will be a bad power board or a bad backlight array. If you cannot make out any shapes etc. it could be a bad main board as well as a bad t-con board etc. You will then have to remove the back cover from your TV and take a look at the aforementioned board. you can always post some pictures of the boards with your question so that we can see what you see.
