Can I replace dock connector of a gen 3 w/ gen 1?

have a broken g1 and functional g3 minus the port can i switch it out?

Realistically, no you cannot. Dock connectors are attached to the logic boards in the iPod Touch. Here you can see the comparison between the 2nd and 3rd generation Touches. They have very similar layouts and could possibly be interchanged (though it most likely would not be compatible). It is the same way with the first and third gen ones. If the logic board in your 1st gen was working, and the 3rd gen somehow was compatible with the 1st gen logic board (again, most likely it is not), you would then basically have a 1st generation touch.

I guess you could try detaching the dock connector from both logic boards and swapping them, but I would not recommend this. It is probably your best shot just to replace the logic board with a new one.

I do not think I would try it. I know that the numbers from all my suppliers show different numbers, so I am certain that there are differences. Best way to find out is to take both iPods apart and see if there are physical differences. The dock connectors are relative inexpensive, but a PITA to replace.
