Back lights on 2009 Mustang

When the car is turned off, the back lights on my 2009 mustang stays on and runs the battery down. The only way they go off is when I push the brake pedal down then pull it up with my foot. What is going on?

@jcarswell your rear lights stay on completely? What have you checked?

by

@oldturkey03 Yes, they stay on completely. They will only go off if I pull the brake pedal forward after pressing to stop. I don't understand. I looked under the brake pedal and couldn't find anything out of place. A mustang isn't the easiest to look around in. Very difficult to get down in front of the front seat to see anything.

Based on your description of how you get the brake lights to go off, I would say the simple answer here is the brake switch is failing or worn, or the brake pedal is not returning to its rest position.

Check operation of the brake pedal first to see if there is anything you can do to improve its function. There may be something causing it to bind and not return fully. If that all seems to be working fine, I would lean towards the brake light switch being faulty.
