Why does this display issue happen?

I opened my Macbook, and suddenly, I saw this issue on the display as shown below:

I could move the cursor but the display still displayed a bunch of vertical lines. To fix this issue, I had to reboot the laptop and everything was back to normal. What causes this?

Its hard to tell if the problem is now gone. I would have connected an external display to see if the problem was localized to the internal display logic or the GPU logic.

You could run diagnostics to see if something pops. You could visit an Apple Store to see if they find anything.

Otherwise you should if you haven’t get the extended warranty AppleCare+ As of 2016 I very strongly recommend signing up! Apple’s design/QC has failed across many different areas with this series. And the Apple one year warranty is just too short for many of these failures to pop.
