Try Option+CMD+R on boot up. this will download the most recent version available for your Macbook Pro.

I think that actually installs the Mac OS it came with in the factory via internet recovery which a lot are Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
Depending on the model version it might not have the recovery partition or even the ability to recover from the internet
And yes it uses macOS not iOS
Adding the Option key to the mix should install most current available version to the specific model.
@jasonmac - Yes that might be possible! But it could be an older2009 unibody which does not support internet recovery. Until we know which exact version we're just throwing darts at the wall ;-}

Emma - You’ll want to restart your system and press Command (⌘) and R keys which will launch into internet recovery.

Hey Dan - I do this but then there's no disk to install it onto.
How did you wipe the drive?
Also, can you pop the bottom cover off and take a picture of the SSD you currernly have and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

The title of this inquiry is confusing to me because I have not been able to figure out if you don’t have an option to install OSX from the Internet as in the illustration on this page: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904 or if it’s your own hard drive that doesn’t show up as a drive upon which to install OSX.

Most of the time the ssd cable of macbook gets broken or gets disconnected after a rough use of it so when the ssd cable either disconnects or gets broken the flashing file appears on screen. To check this issue you have to press command+R , a menu will appear on screen and when you click on disk utility there will be a disk named mac os base system in which there we wont able to click on any of the options given so from that point we know that there is a problem with our ssd cable. This happens because the ssd controls all the system management and mac os system so when the cable wont read the ssd then how a mac os will install and how it can be erase/repartition and repair itself.

@haroonhayat - You'er thinking the older Unibodies which has a SATA drive, this series uses a PCIe blade drive which plugs directly on the logic board (no cable).
