After Headphone Jack replacement: Headphone mic not working

I had to replace the headphone jack because of a faulty mute switch.

I had a lot of scratches on the back of the phone, so I thought it might be a good idea to replace the rear panel as well.

After installing the new parts (thanx to ifixit!!!) everything was working except for the headphone mic and the headphone volume buttons.

My fist thought was I've bought a faulty headphone jack flex cable. So a disassembled the whole thing again, replaced the jack with another one - only to find out that I have the same problem.

Thinking that it is very unlikely that both parts are faulty I connected the no. 5 connector of the flex cable i just took out (the first replacement part not the original one), plugged my headphones in and guess what: Mic and volume buttons are working. So everything is working when the flex cable is not fitted into the phone, but once it is fitted mic and volume buttons are not working.

Any ideas?

bit confused.. there is no mic on the headphone jack...

perhaps you have the metal backing overlapping incorrectly at the point where the volume and mute switch joins...it's held by a small screw.

Maybe I did not make the point clear enough.

The microphone on the headphone is not working (and the two buttons beside it). Headphone is working with another iPhone 3Gs - so that is not the problem. And: Headphone-Mic is working when the headphone jack flex cable is not fitted to the rear panel. So the parts are O.K. - But not working when everything is reassembled...:-(

nick good shot.. in this case the logic board can't be the problem as the headphone works when the flex is connected but not installed in the case, it can't be the flex because that too works. the only thing left to be at fault is the assembly process. A photo here might help us eh?

Here are links to pictures. Could the problems be related to grounding or some kind of short cut caused by the bezel. The rear panel is not an OEM one but a very, very good third party version. Thanks again for the help!!!

it's a little hard to see but i think you have the mute portion over the top of the flex metal backing.. take it back out (again..sorry) and examine those metal backings, you'll find a tiny "L" shaped bracket on the mute portion, this sits behind the volume metal/screw hole. I can only imagine that you haven't seated the headphone jack in the "slot" and slid it all the way to the metal rim and therefore when you insert the headphones it isn't going all the way in to make contact.

Thanks, I changed the position of the L bracket, but that did not help. The headphone jack sits properly. I checked that. The headphone plug should have contact to all the contacts of the jack.

What I really don't get: I just tried one of the headphone jack flex cables that did not properly work in the described way in an other rear panel... and it worked (unfortunately the panel is of very bad built quality and therefore I'm not happy with it).

But it really looks like the fault is to do with the rear panel rather than the flex cable...

i'm stumped! can it be the way you are putting the motherboard in? is it kinking the flex in some way? your power button works when all is in place? if it isn't then maybe the connector is popping back off when you close up.
