Used iMac with vertical stripes- can I get it fixed by Apple?

I recently bought a used Imac Intel (early 2007) that has the vertical stripe problem. Can I get it fixed by Apple via their worldwide LCD warranty?

I called the support number again, pressed 0 a few times and, after waiting a few minutes, was connected to a live person.

I told her about the vertical lines, the worldwide warranty, gave my Imac serial number and asked her to look up the case number/internal KB article. She was gone for a few minutes and came back asking me to pay $49 for a tech session. I said that I would prefer not to pay $49 just to tell my problem again to someone else. She suggested a visit to the local apple store and gave me the link to book an appointment with the Genius bar.

I just came back from my appointment. The apple Genius looked up both case numbers and the internal KB number. He told me that the warranty expired at the end of 2010 ant that my computer was considered vintage.

What can I say, I'll be picking up two more from a Apple Service Provider on Monday that Apple fixed for me doing exactly what I told you to do. Maybe you need to have someone who's had more experience with handling people take care of this call for you. This is the first time I've heard of anyone being turned down.

Yes, it is often who you speak to at Apple. I sometimes just hang up and call back until I get someone who will listen. Mayer, so you have a case # that you can provide. That may help to provide when going back to the Genius bar.

Take a screen shot of the desktop. If your running 10.5 use "Grab" in the Utilities folder. If the lines are not present in the photo (they will still be on the screen) so move the picture in the background, Apple will fix it. They've done three for me.

Register your iMac 1.83 GHz with

wait till you get a reply from Apple (about two days)

Call Apple 1-800-275-2273

You’ve researched the problem and found the answer on both the Apple discussion site and iFixit.

Previous cases:

Case # 204697369 & Case # 186751354

Apple internal KB article is EM80 Campaign

A screen shot shows no recorded lines

Wow, thanks very much! I was concerned that because it is a used Imac I wouldn't be able to take advantage of the Apple fix.

Thanks, you can accept it now. Have you called Apple yet?

Mayer you are god sent saving people money all the time :-)

Remember you recommend me trying a cheap LVDS cable on my water-spilled MacBook before buying a new LED screen. I bless you back!

and I don't get the thing about people complaining on Apple support. Apple has been to me very flexible and curtious and always extended warranty on my Macs. They may not be the ones always suggesting extended warranty but when I ask they never refuse.

Thanks for the praise asle. Apple has been one of the finest companies I've ever heard of about taking care of their customers. Sometimes you do have to be aware of the repairs they will do. I'm still ticked about the G5 capacitor problem and them not extending that program. I also think we'll see se a class action suit on the iMac screen problems down the road so save your receipts.

I called the number that you gave and found myself in an apple voice mail system. After giving the details that it asked for I was told that I had to buy a $49 support session. How can I talk to a human without buying this? Would it be better if I took the computer to the local apple store?

Thanks for your help.

That's because the system understood what you said. Mumble your answers so that it transfers you to a live person and then tell them what you want before they stick you in a category by answering their questions. You'll just have ti interrupt them because they are reading a script. Just say STOP.

I have an iMac that will all of a sudden show gray pinstripes. Nothing can be seen in the background. It's only 2 years old. I have to unplug and restart it and it works ok. This has happened twice in 2 months. What should I do? Buy a new computer? is this fixable?
