No card, but it went online? Did you have a hardwired ethernet cable plugged in?

Your iBook G4 must be the 1.33GHz 12" or the 1.42Ghz 14" with the integrated bluethoot/airport card. This is a documented issue with the airport socket on these models. The problem is caused by the card being screwed to the processor heatsink. When the heatsink is getting warm it takes expension and lift the AP card from the socket causing the socket malfunction and kernel panicks.

Remove the bluethoot/airport card and use a USB wireless dongle. Another solution is to replace the logic board.

You could have one of the higher-end iBook G4s which has an integrated Airport rather than an Airport Extreme card.

I'd boot from the hardware test CD that came with the computer in order to see if it reports any problems. You can also try resetting the PMU and PRAM. I would also try wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the OS...if it does the same thing after you've wiped the drive and started over, this confirms it is a hardware issue, and similarly if it starts working at that point, you know it was software.

You can also boot from another Mac's hard drive by connecting the two machines together via firewire and using target mode, in order to perform the same test (without having to wipe the drive).
