OWC 240GB Aura Pro X2 SSD 2xstart boot

About three months ago I replaced the original SSD with a OWC 240GB Aura Pro X2 SSD, because the original SSD broke.

When I start the laptop the starting sound can be heard two times.

The Apple hardware test program states that there maybe a problem with the memory. But, there is no other problem.

Can I ignore the error report or should I do something?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

What was the reason of the original SSD failing?

The only unusual thing that I could see on this one is that you used cloning software. While the was the standard modus operandi years ago, today we do a clean install of the system and then use MIGRATION ASSISTANT to restore data. You might give that a shot with just moving your data first, then test, then move your APPs.

I wouldn’t ignore the error!

It sounds like your Aura SSD was not setup correctly or something needs to be investigated.

What does the onboard diagnostics tell you for an error code? To run diagnostics restart your system holding the D key.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

Hi Dan.

I don´t know why the original SSD failed because I cannot test it. The Macbook did not recognize the original SSD anymore but an external HD. After I replaced the original SSD, formatet it (APFS), restored the system (Mojave) and my data using a carbon copy cloner backup. The problem with two startup tones appeared several days ago. The error code is VDH002. Unfortuntaley I don´t know which exact memory problem are there and what VDH002 means.

VDH002 – VDH004: Storage device issue

If both drives failed then I suspect there's an issue with the logic board.

If you have an external bootable drive you can use? If you do power down your MAcBook Pro and pull the SSD out, then restart your system with the external drive connected. Don't forget to use the Option key to get to the startup manager to select the external.

Is the beep error gone and if you run diagnostics does the VDH002 not present now?

Thank you for the suggestions. I was very busy and needed the MacBook Pro during the last 2 weeks. It worked without any problems. Since about a week there is no beep error any more for unknown reasons. I did run the tests as you suggested. I pulled the SSD out and could start from an external drive without problems. When I run the diagnostics VDH002 was still present. It looks to me that the MacBook Pro is working ok despite the VDH002 error code.

@dk5ad - Did you contact OWC and talk to them about the error?

I would make sure I have my stuff backed up as often as you can just in case.

Yes I did and here is the answer: "We have received reports of Aura Pro X in some machines running perfectly normally but still returning a VDH002 in Apple Diagnostic; at this time we suspect that Apple Diagnostic is detecting the presence of a non-Apple drive."

It means to me that I should not be worried.
