iPhone 1st gen. screen suddenly turns off and backlight becomes low

my iphone randomly (it s always charged) turns off and when it does turn on, after about an hour or so (i reboot it by connecting it to itunes and pressing home/turn off button) then it shows everything, but it has no light at all, i have to look really hard to see things. Other times though, when it turns on, screenlight is fine and bright..im so confused..otherwise its in mint condition.

when i got it, looked like LCD panel was damaged, it has a white line on the side of the screen, so maybe i need to change the lcd panel? or change the batteries, or both? please, help.

and also, i cannot figure out which model it is since it only says iphone in the about section. so im guessing its iphone 1st generation

if you look at the back of your iphone and see the bottom 1/3 is made of plastic it is a first generation or 2G, if the entire panel is plastic it is a 3G or 3 GS. you can also get a clue as to the generation by clicking settings/general/about and looking at the model no. a 2G is a1203. knowing which generation will help you decide which parts to buy as they are not interchangeable over the generations...

my guess would be the battery. if this is the first generation then the battery must be pretty old by now! If the LCD has a line on the screen of dead pixels then you will need to replace the LCD and digitiser... they come as one part and trying to separate them will only end in lots of tears. You could buy the parts separately and reassemble, then if one part breaks in the future you would only have to buy one (keeps costs down) I haven't included any links to the repair guides as you aren't sure which phone you have.. but they are accessible via the repair tab at the top of this page or by clicking on the step by step guides under the iphone photo. good luck.

I have searched for an hour and I couldn't find LCD and digitizer to buy for IPHONE 1ST GENERATION, sadly. what if i buy LCD and glass digitizer for iphone 3g? or it wont work?

You are sure it's first gen that you want? You can't mix and match parts for different phones...

eBay...$37!!! try putting iPhone 2g LCD in the search.... Absolutely loads.
