Retrieving files from Xioami mi 6 with broken screen (Android).

Dear…

My xiaomi MI 6 has fallen in to the water. After I put the phone a few days in bucket of rice I tried to put it on again. It would go on but the screen wouldn’t work. Changing the screen did not help either and I bought a new phone. However, I want to get the files that are stored on the phone on my computer (pictures, google authenticator file). I have searched the internet but cannot find a way to retrieve the files. If I connect the phone to the PC it will recognize the phone and it will pop up, but when I click on the phone the message ‘no files are there appears’. The problem is that I cannot put the phone in file transfer mode (need the screen). Another problem is that the phone is not in debugging mode. So, the regular options I found on the internet did not work.

Can someone please help me to retrieve the files stored on my xiaomi mi 6? (I am getting desperate because I really need the files).

Kind regards,

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

I had this issue before, when wanting to recover txt messages I deleted.

Try downloading PhonePaw application on your PC. The only issue you will have is the phone is not in debugging mode. Without that turned on it might be impossible to recover the data..

Here is a link to there site, hope it helps you.

Update (06/22/2019)

If there is oxidation on the board cleaning the word with alcohol might help, but in most cases it will not depending how much charge he had on the battery when it got wet.

Thanks for the advice!

However, i already tried this and as you mentioned the phone is not in debugging mode so it would not work.

@techman007 corrosion will always form regardless of "how much charge he had on the battery " It could be as simple as a corroded connector to as complicated as a corroded SMD component or trace. I would require a schematic to trace the signal etc.

@brabant076 before you do anything further you need to properly deal with the water damage.

First off, take it out of the rice. IT DOES NOT WORK This is a myth that really has to disappear. Skip the rice. It is absolutely useless.''' It will not help you fix your phone. All it does is that it provides a false sense of security. It will not clean your phone, it will not prevent corrosion.

Second, stop continuing to try to charge, sync or otherwise use your phone. This potentially can make a bad situation worse. This may further damage your phone.

The next thing to do is to clean it. Disassemble your phone where this video should help. You must remove all EMI shields. If you do not remove those, you might as well not do anything. After you removed those, clean the whole board, connectors and all with +90% isopropyl alcohol. Follow this guide , and even so it was written for an iPhone 3G all the points are still pertinent to your phone. While you clean your board, check for any obvious damage, like burned or missing components etc. When it is properly cleaned, replace the battery. All these steps are to avoid delayed failure caused by corrosion. Best thing to do would be to clean it with an ultrasonic cleaner, but if you do not have access to one, this will at least help. Once all this is done, reassemble your phone and reevaluate. Until it is cleaned, everything will only be a guess. Even with all this, water damage has only a small chance to be fully repaired, but at least you can give it a try. The problem appears to be with the video circuitry on your board.

@oldturkey03

thanks for the reply!

I already brought the phone to a repair shop for repair after water damage. The cleaned all the components etc. However, the phone turns on again but the screen is useless (stays black). When we changed the screen, the same thing happened the phone will turn on but the screen stays black. As you mentioned, the problem is probably with the he video circuitry.

My goal is not to have a working phone again (since I have another one now). I just want to retrieve the files from the phone, but the problem is that the phone is not in debugging mode and I am not able to put it in.

@brabant076 agreed but it can't be done unless you get to the right mode. You can always try a seasoned micro soldering xpert that has specialized with data recover after water damage.
