What computer do you have? Is it a Powermac G4 or a Powerbook G4? Please give us the last three numbers of the serial number.

mactect gives good advice but the first thing I would try is to reset the pmu and pram. I am including a link to show you where the pmu switch is. Just push it once--don't hold it down. The switch is to the left of the fan. To reset the pram hold option-command-p-r and keep holding when you turn the computer on until you here a total of three chimes. If this doesn't work follow mactechs advice. Good luck.

Try booting with your system CD and run disk utility. From there run Disk First Aid and tell it to repair. That would be the first thing to try. When you boot the computer hold down your mouse button to open the drive. Then reboot computer and hold down the C key to boot to CD/DVD.

To attempt a repair of almost anything you need the tools to do it. Call Apple and see if you can buy an original system installation disk for your machine. You might also try replacing the 3.6 volt 1/2 AA PRAM battery.
