Can I replace the screen data cable with a later version?

Hi everybody.

I have an iBook g4 14" 1.33 with a faulty LCD panel.

I have mistakenly bought a used 14" LCD which turned out to be the part used on later iBooks (the 1.42GHz model of 2005).

I have done some research and discovered that these later models use a screen data cable with a 1" connector (narrow) whilst my one has a 1.5" connector (wide).

My question is: can I replace the screen data cable on my lappy with one that is compatible with the screen I bought (i've seen the guide 'Installing iBook G4 14" 933 MHz-1.33 GHz Display Data Cable')? In other words, is the "narrow connector" cable compatible with my logic board?

It would probably be much cheaper than selling back the lcd and getting a compatible one...

Many thanks

The LVDS cable socket on the logic board is the same on the two ibook models but it's true that the LCD panel socket is different. Swapping the two panels and using the 1.42 LVDS cable shout work but maybe you'll have to remove the modem in your 1.33 to reach the logic board socket.

Did you know that you can replace a ibook G4 14" panel with a iBook G3 14" one ? They are compatible and you can use your 1.33 LVDS cable.

If you bought a 1.42 ibook G4 complete assembly you will not be able to swap the panel to your 1.33 machine without swapping the display internal cabling cause the 1.33 & 1.42 machine use different inverter cable, microphone cable and the reed switch magnet (that triggers the sleep function) is located in the LCD panel on the 1.42 model unlike the 1.33 (the magnet is located on the optical drive).

I bought the LCD panel only (including the inverter of course) so it shouldn't be the case of your last part.

I do expect it to be a pain to disassemble it all, but frankly I'd be wasting a lot of money in shipping costs if I got a new LCD and sold this one. Definitely more than the price of the cable.

Just wanted to hear if anybody else had done anything similar...

just to close the story, it took some laziness, but in the end I swapped the cables and connected the screen... Overall 50£ for the screen and 20$ for the cable which will give my mac another 2 years of life...

thanks for your advice!
