Why do SOME DVD players play subtitles but others do not?

This is more of a question than a ifixit problem. Can anyone tell me why some DVD players will play subtitles and others will not ? My players and my DVDs are all region #1. VERY confused.

Thank you for any info you may know.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi @ramses2

Just to check if you use the remote control to toggle the subtitle button, does it display?

I know some dvd either has to set in the menu to display or global setting of the dvd is set not to display by default.

  • Region 1 - Canada, the United States and U.S. territories.
  • Region 2 - Japan, Europe, South Africa, the Middle East (including Egypt) and Greenland.
  • Region 3 - Southeast Asia, and East Asia (including Hong Kong).
  • Region 4 - Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean.
  • Region 5 - Eastern Europe, Russia, the Indian Subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia.
  • Region 6 - China.
  • Region 7 - reserved for unspecified special use.
  • Region 8 - Special international venues for air and oceanic travel.
  • If a disc or a player does not have any regional coding, it will say 0 or ALL for all regions. Many discs created with home-video capture software are coded as Region 0 and should play in your DVD player.

* DVD players sold in the U.S.are coded to play Region 1 DVD discs.

  • I recommend the PAL version of DVD Players(made for the Middle East for example which have ALL or Global Regional code) to buy.The region number of your disc or player can be determined by looking for a small, standardized globe icon with the region number superimposed on it. Also some devices, such as computer DVD drives, can be modified to play discs from other regions.

All of my DVD's are region #1. Both of my DVD players are region #1. I have two DVD players: Philipps and also Sony. Some of my DVD's will play subtitles on one machine but not on the other. Is there such a thing as a DVD player (region #1 of course) that will play ALL OF MY REGION #1 DVD'S ?
