During spin cycle NOISE

During the spin cycle it starts off quiet enough but at some point the agitator will be spinning and then all of a sudden jerk like it is starting to catch on something. If i lightly put the palm of my hand on the top of the agitator and keep it from spinning, the sound stops and the spin cycle will run fine and quiet while I hold it. If i let go, it will do it again.

i am thinking it is the cogs failing. Any ideas?
