How to fix a home button problem?

I purchased a new lcd/digitiser but it did not come with a new home button. I've used my old one as there were no problems with it, but now I've replaced the screen it doesn't want to work. The flex hasn't been tampered with at all so should still work. How can I test to find out what the problem is? If I take the metal plate off and look underneath, there is the 'spring' that is associated with the home button. Is there anything I need to make sure that is touching to make sure it is working?

Answer this question I have this problem too

The home button is built into the metal plate you see when you first remove the digitizer. You'll see a small dimple button. You can test if that is ok, while the lid is up so to speak, by switching the ipod on and then opening an app and depressing the dimple with a match or toothpick. If it exits the app then the home button is ok.

If it doesn't, well the button flex needs replacing.

On rereading your question though i strongly suspect you are referring to the ipod touch 2nd or 3rd gen which has a gold spring located just below the lcd. This is need to create the home button circuit and if it is missing the home button will not work.

I'll refer you to a link discussing this if i am allowed:

Hey-is definitely the 4th generation as it has the camera. The gold spring is located just below the metal plate where the home button is. I fixed this problem by bend the clip towards the home flex, thus completing the circuit so that depressing the home button would initiate the home command. A lot easier than I had anticipated :D

Thanks for trying to help though xD

I know this is an old post, but I figured this might help someone else in need. I had this issue as well. What I noticed was that there is a tiny black dimple, about the size of a grain of sand (maybe bigger), that is on the part of the home button flex cable that helps the home button make contact with the flex cable actuator. I had to find something very tiny to take the place of the missing dimple. After doing this it worked fine. Remember, it needs to be really small or the home button will continuously depress. Hope this helps.

I used a grain of sand from my daughters sand art. I ended up buying a replacement home button ribbon cable at $4 a piece. I ended up buying 5 of them and 2 of them came without this nipple. I had them ship me two more.
