Battery gauge reading 14 then drops to 12ish

Why at start up my battery gauge reads14 but after a few it drops to above 12ish

This is normal. They are designed to reduce alternator output when the battery is fully charged. This is to improve fuel mileage. This topic is described in the owners manual.

could be a worn battery as well as a failing alternator. Check the output of the alternator to verify that the gauge is true. Check this Ford ;-) guide 1997-2003 Ford F-150 Alternator Replacement on where to place the meter to confirm the output.
