My MBP Mid 2015 Backlight died due to water damage

Hi there!

My Macbook Pro 15” Mid 2015 (2.2 ghz) display backlight died due to water damage. I have seen various tutorials and found that either very specific parts need to be replaced or the entire logic board.

If I have to shell out extra $’s then I have seen logic board options for up-to 2.8ghz with dual graphic cards. Can I purchase and use one of those instead?

PS: I can confirm that it is only the backlight as I can use a flash light on the Apple logo at the back of the screen and see some of the screen’s content. I am currently using my machine with my iMac on Target Display mode.

Update: Spent a couple of hours with my technician and it appears the problem lies with the display adapter/jack. The IC, fuse and capacitors are all returning proper voltage but the adapter is not. I have attached the pictures as well.

Can anyone help me find the exact part please? Thanks in advance!

@arbaman what do you think? repair or replace?

by

@oldturkey03 Those boards, even used and/or repaired cost big bucks: I'd definitely go for the backlight repair but if the OP insists on a replacement I'd volunteer purchasing his broken one at a reasonable price ;)

If I can get it repaired then obviously repairing will be my first priority. I have to be prepared for the worst case scenario of the logic board replacement.

@zohaibam It can of course be repaired, there's a fair number of people around the globe taking care of component level repairs on logic boards. Backlight circuit isn't particularly challenging, as one knows right from the beginning where to start from, but being a high voltage circuit, damage may be quite extended and especially when liquids come to picture it happens quite often that besides components replacement one has to rebuild the circuit itself..that requires good skills and experience, thus try to choose a reputable tech with experience on Macs. Although I believe @danj advice to replace the fuse is a bit of a overoptimistic solution in case of liquid damage, I fully agree with his other suggestions below.

Very good points. I did take out the battery and put my machine open and upside down the entire day. I wanted to take a full Time Machine backup so I can work on my iMac 2011 the coming week.

I’ll be going to a pretty trusted technician tomorrow. I just want to be prepared for the worst case scenario of logic board replacement- and while at it, know if there is any possibility of setting up an upgraded logic board.

Thank you!

by

@zohaibam Yes, the logic board can be upgraded just in case. However, unless you need the graphic power of the R9 discrete GPU of the higher end board, benchmarks of the 2.5ghz and 2.8ghz boards are otherwise quite close whereas the 2.8ghz will come at premium price.

by

@arbaman - I agree fixing the logic board will be cheaper, and the performance between the different CPU's alone is not worth the cost, Going from an IG to a DG model would offer more graphics performance but would be more expensive.

by

@danj so the IG to DG board upgrade is possible? What other components are needed? I unfortunately couldn't meet with the technician today, will try again tomorrow. Thank you for the support!

OK for now lets stop using your MacBook Pro as you could make recovery harder and more costly!

Disconnect the battery following this guide MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2015 Battery Replacement Stop at Step 5.

Now you’ll need to get some materials pulled together so you can clean your logic board. Get a bottle of distilled water and a bottle of 85% or better isopropyl alcohol. You’ll also need cotton swabs, a soft toothbrush and a small soft paint brush.

Follow this guide taking the logic board out fully MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2015 Logic Board Replacement. Carefully inspect the logic board looking for corrosion and stains on the backside of the logic board as well as the black insulator.

Once you get the system cleaned you should be able to replace the fuse Fuse: F77003 AMP-32V

Is this Fuse F77003 AMP-32V available at iFixit?

and thank you for the prompt response!

Whoa! Thats not the first thing, you need to clean the logic board and inspect it for damage. There maybe more damaged than just the fuse. If you see something in question take a a clear picture and post it for us to see Adding images to an existing question

The fuse and many other of the smaller SMT resistors and capacitors are available from electronic supply houses like Mouser Some parts can be gotten from Rossmann Group

@danj the photos have been updated. Can you please help me find the part(s)? Thank you!

The display cable connector needs cleaning and you might need a new one. I see corrosion on the pins. Using the distilled water carefully wipe down the pins getting as much off as you can. Next you'll need to re-solder the pins with flux and solder. Then clean off the flux off with the isopropyl alcohol the pins should be nice and shiny and you'll want to use a magnifier to make sure there are no bridging or solder balls. I find a wooden toothpick is helpful.

Picture is not quite clear enough to see if thats all it was. Take another focusing on the connector. You'll need a bit more lighting also take a picture of the cable end both top & bottom and we should take some picks of the other side of the logic board as well.
