Power supply replacement PN exchange

I have a Aug 2004 G5 Tower. Push power button & nothing. Tried the little pmu and unplugging, no better. Phone tech's all say power supply likely gone. I have a power supply from a June 2004 G% tower that has one number different from mine, a gift from work IT guys I just had to remove it. Part # on Aug 2004 is 614 - 0307 and part number on the June 2004 is 614 - 0306. Both are 600 Watt. All voltages match on both labels but are in a different order. Manufacturer different. Will these interchange or am I running the risk of cooking the guts of my G5? Thanks for any input. Wayne

This startup problems are due to bad power supply to my experience. I had the same with G4 Quicksilver. Sometimes it starts up and running OK too. Mostly it stopped on gray screen or apple logo or blue screen. But after replacing the PS it starts up fine every time.

Yes, these power supplies are cross compatible. They were probably just manufactured at different times. The new power supply should work without a hitch.

Thanks, the newer one works, I think. The G5 powers up, I get chimes and a blue screen, nothing else. The first time I turned it on I got chime and nothing else. 2nd time chime and apple start up screen but no clock spinner showing progress. after that just a blue screen a few seconds after the chimes. Suggestions please? Thanks Wayne

Try starting up from your system installation disk by inserting the disk and holding down the "C" key. If so go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities > Disk Utilities, select the internal hard drive on the left and run repair on it, then repair the permissions. If your fans start running wild after it boots up you will need to run the fans syncing program on your installation disk. Was it starting up OK before the power supply went bad?

Yes, Started up fine. It has had the fans running kinda wild from time to time for over a year. Did not know about the fan syncing program, just thought it was one of those things that came with age. I'll try that after work and see if that helps. Going on my memory, disk repair and repairing permissions should not cause any data loss? Not that that really matters if the entire unit is toast. My fear is that I might have messed up the processors.

Thanks for your help and patience, Wayne

Do you have the original installation disks with the AHT on them, if so, start up holding down the "D" key with the disk inserted.

Ummm, sorry to be a dummy whats the AHT and how will I know if it's on the disk. I have disk from the G5 and from a G4 that I bought new. G5 = DVD G4 = CD

You will most likely need the AHT for your computer to fix the runaway fan issue. Some replacement power supplies do and some don't trigger the temp sensors to need recalibration. Just do a google search for the Apple Hardware Test for your computer to download it and burn to disk and boot your computer to it. I have had to use it on two out of three G5 Towers I have had to replace this past year. I had found the file image on free sites. sorry I do not have the site at hand for you.
