Very slow install and file transfers

My imac 17 core 2 duo OSX 10.4.7 2 gig RAM is really slow. Fresh install of original disks took 2 days. I did the "rember" test and disk verify - both came back okay. File transfers also take forever. DVD plays okay. Movie from portable hard drive plays okay. Transferring files - takes forever. Unable to multitask while transferring files (itunes song and transferring a file from USB). Have not installed other programs or been online since fresh install.

I would get my data backed up ASAP. This is most likely a failing hard drive. RAM does not slow down. You can try to go in and reformat the hard drive using the "write zeros" option to map out any bad blocks but frankly I would just replace it.

It sounds like a bad hard drive mine did that a few months before it crashed. Install a new drive and that should solve it.

It was the hard drive.I still don't understand why I didn't get an error message, but it was definitely the hard drive.
