My computer is quite old, however at the moment it is unusable as the fan is making a very loud noise and everything is slow. Also the volume button is not Woking as when I try to turn the volume up it says not working. This has happened before and I somehow managed to fix it however I have forgotten what I did. anyone know any fixes?

You likely have two different issues here. The volume issue is likely caused by a corrupted SMC. Lets see if resetting it solves the problem. Follow this Apple T/N How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac
I’m suspecting your battery is at the end of its life given the age of your system. Lets check it out but running this gem of an app CoconutBattery take a snapshot and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question
