Some of the rain water had gotten into the laptop.

Hello

Please I need help here. Rain fell while I was out and my laptop was close to the window. Some of the rain water had gotten into the laptop. It's was at night. I came back, dried it with a towel since the laptop was shut. I assumed the water did not get into the keyboard so I just cleaned the surface. Next day, I tried to turn the laptop on but it wasn't responding. I took battery out and plug it to a power source, the LED lights signified it was charging but the power button is not coming on. Please what do you suggest I do.

Hi @unyimemark ,

What is the model number of the laptop if it is not a Compaq CQ62?

As you know water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the laptop’s operating design and could damage the components.

First do not try to turn on or charge your laptop and then you need to remove the battery as soon as possible from the laptop to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the laptop and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ (available from electronics parts stores), to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain scents and is not as effective. If you do check the label to verify the amount of IPA.

Here is a link that describes the process.

Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the laptop might possibly work correctly again.

If it is a Compaq CQ62 then here’s a link to the ifixit Compaq Presario CQ62 Motherboard Replacement guide, which may be of some help.

If this process seems too daunting, take your laptop to a reputable, professional laptop repair service experienced in water damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

It may be best to wait several days before you turn on your laptop again. This will make sure that all the water in the laptop has dried and there is none left.

If the laptop still won’t turn on after the several days of waiting, then the water may have damaged one or more of the electrical components in the device. It may then need to be serviced.
