Computer Starts,screen wont turn on until I open and close lid x3

Hi everyone, i have tried looking around to find a solution to this but have had no luck. I even went into the genius bar but he couldn't replicate the problem.

Basically, about 80% of the time i start the laptop, nothing will display, the computer starts, lights on keyboard turn on ect. I leave it for a few minutes, then close the lid, open the lid (to induce sleep mode and wake up) and do this until finally the screen comes on and i can use it.

I have tried re-formatting and installing the whole thing from scratch, Pram reset, tried fixing permissions, searched online... Even when i am using it and its been working for a while, if it goes to turn the screen off when say 5 mins of inactivity, the screen wont turn on. I plug in an external monitor and that will show, but not the laptop screen...

I have installed Windows as well to test it, and the same issue occurs. Even when initially starting the laptop, often i wont even see the startup screen. Sometimes i will see the startup screen but when it gets to loading the operating system it will be blank until i do the lid open and close ect...

Has anyone found a solution to this?

My MacPro lappy is a mid 2009 model. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since the external monitor works your problem is isolated to the display portion on your book. If you can discern the desktop faintly when this happens the problem is most likely your inverter. Move the screen up and down slowly and see if it clears up, if so, replace the Display Data Cable. Let us know your results. Also to identify your machine please give us the last three figures of your serial number.

Hi Mayer, thanks for your time in responding. Firstly, its actually a mid 2009 model, not 2008... my mistake... I have done as you suggested to see if it does clear up, and nothing happens. The laptop screen will function fine once it turns on, usually after 3 or 4 open and closes, until it gets shut down, or sleep ect..

I thought it might be a firmware issue, but i cant confirm...

The last 3 digits of my serial number are 644.
