What causes the display to light up intermittently when opening up ?

Could this problem be a worn display cable?

The problem is most likely the inverter cable. But G3 iBooks are finicky when it comes to display issues. Your best bet is to hook it up to an external monitor to see if the problems continue. If it's the same on the external monitor, it's most likely the graphics processor on the logic board. If the problems don't manifest on the external monitor, the problem is most likely the inverter cable.
