Surface Book 1703 Rear Camera Power Failure/Replacement

I recently purchased a broken Surface Book Performance Base model on eBay.

The top of the tablet/clipboard portion of the device near the power button was at one point bent. I have since straightened it out. It was bent enough that it actually cracked the display (I’ve since replaced that as well.) Fortunately, the tape I used to put the new screen on isn’t strong enough and I just realized that the rear camera wasn’t working. So I will soon be able to get inside again to inspect the camera.

My main concern is that the camera’s ribbon cable is torn but I’m hoping the camera just came detached from the motherboard. When checking in Device Manager I’m seeing a power failure error for the rear camera.

I was curious if anyone knows if these use the same camera as the Surface Pro 4’s? I can’t seem to find ANY replacement cameras online for the Surface Book so I think this is likely my only hope here.

I will post more information when I am able to open it back up.

Thanks in advance!

Based on the product teardown, they don’t have the same dimensions so won’t fit. Not sure if they use the same chip though.

Surface repair parts are extremely difficult to source due to the closed nature of the supply chain and limited quantity therefore limited profit for resellers.

That's what I was afraid of. I appreciate that. Out of curiosity though, where did you find these teardowns? As far as I could tell the iFixit teardown didn't show much of anything useful.

I guess the fact that there aren't a lot of them available might be a testament to their longevity, or perhaps, conversely, their undesirability. You would think people might scoop them up to try to sell their parts individually.

Never mind, I looked at the iFixit teardown again and it does show it haha. Thanks
