IFIXIT KIT For SSD and CPU

Hi IFIXIT

I would like to purchase a full kit for upgrading my ssd and cpu for my iMac model details:

  • iMac17,1
  • Intel Core i5 3.2 GHz
  • Memory 32 GB

I need a faster CPU and larger capacity SSD as I am using this machine as a music production center, I do have an external LaCie 1TB HHD

Any recommendations if the process is necessary as it’s a major strip down and highest spec of components would be greatly received.

As I would like the Mac to last another ten years before I outgrow my baby.

Kindest regards,

Bobby

Update (02/27/2019)

Hey Guys

Thank you very much for the advice and help. I do believe that SSD would be a blade type as listed with a PCI connection, though I’m not sure, The iMac was a custom build from Apple.

Then I would like to replace the i5 to a i7 6700K. I know this system has a socketed CPU and not soldered. So, I would like to get a full kit from you guys to perform my operation.

If you have the processor and a 2TB SSD drive at a competitive price or an even recommendations, for higher spec’d CPU as I’m using the iMac for music production.

IFIXIT is a highly regarded company, to my Peers who sing you praises, so I am looking forward to the upgrade,

Kindest regards, and thank you for the help.

Bobby

Your systems specs: iMac 27" 3.2 GHz i5 (5K, Late 2015)

The systems series: iMac17,1

If your system come with the 1 TB PCIe/NVMe blade SSD then you'll want to get a SATA SSD for the vacant HD bay. Here's the 2 TB drive you asked for Crucial MX500 2 TB SSD When you place the order ask them for the upgrade kit iMac Intel 27" (Late 2012-2019) SSD Upgrade Kit without the drive. That way you'll have the needed tools and cables, as well as the replacement adhesive strips.

IFIXIT doesn't offer the CPU you want you'll need to find a local source for that.

I’ll try this piecemeal and one thing at at time so I will be adding to this answer,

CPU go with the : "Core i7" 4.0 (I7-6700K)

RAM

RAM Type:PC3-14900 DDR3Min. RAM Speed:1867 MHz

Details:Supports 1867 MHz PC3-14900 DDR3 SDRAM SO-DIMMs (204-pin).

Standard RAM:8 GBMaximum RAM:64 GB*

Details:By default, 8 GB is installed as two 4 GB memory modules (and two slots are unoccupied).

To save some $, keep the two 4 GB and add two 16GB sticks for a total of 40 GB!

I’m not sure but it looks like you may be running four 8GB now, so a RAM upgrade may not help you much.

Video on the i5

Video Card:Radeon R9 M395*VRAM Type:GDDR5

Details:*By default, this model has an AMD Radeon R9 M395 graphics processor with 2 GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory. At the time of purchase, it also can be upgraded to an AMD Radeon R9 M395X graphics processor with 4 GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory for an additional US$250.

Video on the i7 it states

Video Card:Radeon R9 M390/M395*VRAM Type:GDDR5

Details:*This custom configured model could be equipped with either a Radeon R9 M390 or Radeon R9 M395 graphics processor with 2 GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory if only the processor was upgraded in either the iMac "Core i5" 3.2 27-Inch Aluminum (Retina 5K, Late 2015/Skylake) or iMac "Core i5" 3.3 27-Inch Aluminum (Retina 5K, Late 2015/Skylake). At the time of purchase, it also could be equipped with an AMD Radeon R9 M395X graphics processor with 4 GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory as an additional custom configuration for an extra US$250.

Both 2danj and I were answering this a t the same time and I see he has addressed the storage.

Hi Mayer

Thank you very much for the reply, my SSD is a 500GB PCI with a 3.2Ghz Intel core i5 and memory of 32GB 1687 MHz DDR3. The graphics card is a AMD Radom R9 M380 2048MB. The model is a late 2015 5K,

What I would like know as I have been told I can keep the 500GB for booting and ruining my major music production software programs but this model does already have an empty SATA connection and space in the empty space it once lived, I would like to afd and install an 3,8 or 10GB in there, I f possible to keep my unit as one at the moment for my needs, Rather than standing up with age.p@t price of a 10GB SSD PCI.

Once again i do appreciate your help with this matter and thank you very much for your time!

kindest regards,

Bobbie,

You are limited to what Apple used in your given systems series iMac 27" 4.0 GHz i7 (5K, Late 2015). Here’s the needed CPU: 4.0 GHz Core i7-6700K. Here’s the needed guide you’ll need to follow: iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display CPU Replacement
