I just had this iMac donated to me, but when I try to do anything, It tells me that it can not open or run the program (etc.). Upon further investigation, I discovered that there is missing software. Is there any way that I can repair/fix this problem, and if so,...how can I do this?

Contact Apple and they will sell you a set of original disk for about $15 ea. Format your drive and reinstall a operating system.
