Freezer Door Not Closing Properly

I have a Kenmore fridge. The top of the freezer door is not level (it is dropping as you go away from the hinge and get closer to the handle side of the door) and it is causing a gap where frost is collecting on the outside of the seal. The gap is on the handle side of the fridge, opposite the hinge, at the top of the door. When I undo the two screws that are holding the top hinge plate in place and make the door level, the holes in the hinge plate do not line up with the pre-drilled holes in the top of the fridge. Should I just drill new holes? What other options are there to fix this?

Hi @mikegibb ,

What is the model number of the fridge?

How old is the fridge?

If new has it always been like this.

Not quite sure but drilling new holes may not be a good option. You don't know what you are drilling into, whether there is enough metal to hold the bracket behind the skin of the cabinet and therefore hold the weight of the door or even if there is any wiring behind where you want to drill which you wouldn't want to hit

Wondering if the hinge bracket has been (or has become) bent so that it doesn't line up with the holes any more. Perhaps a new hinge bracket may solve the problem

Thanks for the response. The fridge is eight years old. We bought it new. I don't know for how long this has been a problem, but I just noticed it. The hinge bracket looks like it has not been bent. Sears wants to charge me $99 for someone to come out and look at it, and it doesn't feel to me like its that big of a problem to fix. But I don't know what my options are.

Hi @mikegibb ,

Can only suggest that you search online for "(insert model number of fridge) parts".

There are suppliers online that have exploded parts diagrams of the fridges.

Hopefully from this you may be able to work out what is in the vicinity of the hinges in the cabinet (and also in the door) and also the cost of the replacement hinges.

It's a Kenmore model 253.67870508 fridge - FYI
