i unlocked/jailbroke it successfully and inserted my tmob. sim but it wouldn't read it. i eventually went to a phone repair store and was told that the phone wouldn't read any sim. how do i fix this myself?

try resetting the network settings
settings>general>reset>reset network settings (OS4.3)
settings>general>network>cellular data network>reset settings (OS3.1)

i did the resetting network steps before i took it in...multiple times.
the iphone shows "no SIM"
originally i jailbroke it with redsnow, unlocked it with ultrasnow. i did this multiple times. even tried heaveniphone's ultrasnow. i have a feeling the problem might be within the hardware. i got it from my boyfriend and he has dropped a few times so something might have been knocked loose.
Take a look at THIS guide and open up your iPhone and check for loose connections or damaged parts

try putting tape on back side of sims so it pushes dron harder on pickups ..

What does iPhone screen show? Warning? No Service? What is in top left corner of screen?

what did you do to unlock/jailbreak? if it isn't unlocked it will only recognise the original network provider and it won't recognise PAYG SIM which repair man prob used. did you have signal on network before unlock??
