iPhone SE display has problem, motherboard not shorted

Hi guys, I have an iPhone SE here. The phone is not water damaged, hasn’t been dropped or anything. The phone has a strange problem. The phone can work perfectly for about 10-20 minutes, then suddenly vertically lines running across the screen appeared (see the attached photo). Then the phone went to boot loop. I successfully restored the phone to original factory settings, didn’t get any error. The phone would work for about 10-20 minutes, then same problem happened.

I connected the phone to power supply. It turned on fine, could boot into main screen, worked flawlessly, but I need to increase the power to about 4.9V. Normally a phone can be booted with 3.9-4V. But with this SE, if I set the power supply to 4V, the phone wouldn’t boot into main screen, it stayed in boot loop.

I didn’t see any short on motherboard, the board is clean. I don’t know where to start. Could it be the PMIC faulty?

I would not continue to feed it 4.9V. It’s an interesting find, no doubt, but it may cause damage because something isn’t regulating properly and the danger is that higher voltages (or spikes) are making their way downstream.

Whenever your faced with a novel problem, you have to get back to basics. Some folks like to swap out “typical” IC’s like Tristar…I like to probe the board looking for clues. It’s like going to the doctors and saying you have abdominal pain. Do you want the doctor to slice you open to have a look or do you want them asking question, examining you, doing diagnostic tests etc. before determining what to do next :>).

Now, chances are the problems (image, reboot, high voltage) are related.

So my advice would be to start probing the Chestnut, PMIC, TIGRIS, TRISTAR etc. For example, pump 4.2V into the battery connector and check out how the TIGRIS circuit handles this. Connect and disconnect the charger and see how the MOSFET behaves. That will give you a good indication if the charging circuit is working normally. Then move onto the PMIC and Chestnut.

I second the same approach, finding out where the problem is might be boring sometimes but helps building up knowledge and selfconfidence. However, the monkey see monkey do approach is fast and very fascinating, we are primates after all ;P

That could be a few different things. This makes me think logic board (I have a Android tablet that does the same thing to a lesser extent), but it could also be a worn LCD display (or other technical issue). If it is the logic board, it may not be worth it, but the LCD display may be worth it. You may be able to use it for a little bit, but I would suggest taking it in, as you could entirely remove the issue if it isn't too expensive. If it is too high though, your better off buying a new one
