How can I repair my latch?
The latch doesn't catch. Any solution?
I would also like to make the thing run faster. Any way to upgrade the machine to Intel chip?

No, it's not possible to upgrade a PowerBook to an Intel processor, unfortunately.
Which screen size PowerBook do you have? It is possible to repair the latch, although it's not easy, and generally not worthwhile, in my opinion, because you'll often need to take apart the screen assembly. The first thing I'd do is take a look at the hook in the center-top of the screen that comes down and latches to the base (you can use the point of a paperclip to gently pull it out). Is the curve of the "hook" still present? This will help determine which part of the latch needs replacement. Also, if you close the case almost fully so that the lid is about 1/2 inch from the base, do you see the hook come out at all, due to magnetism?
One thing to be aware of with PowerBooks is that often bending in the aluminum causes the screen to not close straight, and so the hook often is no longer in line with the base. It's worth checking if everything is lined up straight when the lid is closed. Sometimes, if not, you can gently push it to the correct position, and the latch will take hold.

The only way to speed up the box is to max out the ram, and have at least as much free space on your HD (for swapping).

Also you can get a faster hard drive with more RPMs. There's tricks to overclock your processor, but they're not necessarily safe.
