Replace optical drive with GSA-S10N; discs do not spin?

I purchased a GSA-S10N for my A1181 Macbook C2D (running 10.6). After I placed the drive in, it was hard to insert discs. After the discs inserted, they wouldn't spin, just spit back out. I returned the drive and got a new one. This time, the discs insert smoothly, but still don't spin. It spits the discs out as soon as they are in. I updated the firmware from BP10 to AP12, to no avail. My previous drive was a UJ-857C. The original drive works, it just won't burn DL discs, which is what started me on this quest (it has a problem with the laser when attempting to burn DL discs). So I'm sure that the cable is fine. As rdklinc mentions in the following thread:

Why won't my disc insert into Superdrive?

my new (and old) drive resets itself at startup. I just contacted Computer Geeks, and they sent me a RMA. Before I go through a third drive (which I'm worried may not resolve this issue), I wanted to know if there is anything else I can try. I do have another optical drive cable I will try, but I'm not sure the cable works (from a stuck drive). Any thoughts, suggestions and comments appreciated.

So, I changed the cable, which did not work. I had a "headless" macbook with similar specs which I then tried to install the drive into, which did work. It now read CD's, DVD's and burns DL DVD's in the headless macbook (which is it's new home). I will test out all the other storage media later. I will reinstall my original DVD drive in my macbook, and call it a day. Hope this helps someone down the road.

Since your old drive is working, personally I would go with an external drive. Most people don't burn disks that often, the drive costs much less and the drive will move to your next Mac or if selected properly, your next MacBook Air. http://www.lacie.com/us/products/family....

The issue is that I can't return the drive. They will only replace it. When I returned the first one, I wanted a refund since it was within 30 days, not a new drive, but they sent me a new drive instead (?!). At this point, I'm not 100% sure it's the drive, but the cable works, the drive is "supposed" to work with my laptop, and I can't think of anything else to try.

Also, since I was expecting a refund, not a new drive, I already purchased an external drive. The issue is now I have a drive I can't use, $70 out of pocket, and the time I've spent troubleshooting unsuccessfully :( I figure I'd give it one last shot at recouping some of that at least.
