Help, Repair FPC contact pads a1278

Block Image

I bought a cheap hot air solder iron and applied to much force with tweezers and ended up ripping 5 of the contact pads off should of just stuck to the regular solder… Is this repairable? It looks like I would be able to run wires possibly? Any info on where to run wires would be greatly appreciated!

I located this, not sure what part of the logic board this is? Do I run wires to these locations? Is this the chip right below the connector?

If anyone knows the location of where I can run wires to the new chip it would be greatly appreciated!

Before you worry about the chips lets see if you can remount the ribbon connector. Clean the pads off using a soldering iron and solder wick. Also see if you can re-tin the pads, if not get some copper foil tape to repair them. Once you've got them rebuilt clean off the connector and remount it.

If you did it right you shouldn't need any jumpers.

Repairing lifted pads is not inherently difficult if you have the rights tools and a bit of experience. Here’s an example of work I did on an iMac when a customer pulled the screen out too forcefully ;>). A good soldering station, some thin gauge enamelled wire (36 - 42 AWG) and some UV-Curable solder mask and you will be good to go.

If you can find a local micro-solderer, they should be able to fix that for you which will be much less expensive than replacing the logic board. I don’t know if @danj does micro-soldering work but he can certainly help you out.

@refectio - I no longer do it as my arthritis gets me into trouble holding things steady ;-{

I would have used Copper Foil PCB Repair Tape. When I do wire patches I use spaghetti tubing as the enameled wire coating is not enough signal separation 0.5mm Micro Food Grade Silicone Tubing Capillary Hose

typically its a pain to replace contact pans and as far as I know near impossible. but if I read correctly @danj does mail in repairs. so he’d probably be the trust worthy one to know that info. typically I don’t buy cheap soldering irons or re-work tools.
