Laptop boots to a black screen, then LCD lights but still black.

I think the year is 2014, the images of it on the inside look like mine.

The other day when I booted it, nothing came up. The LCD powers on but the screen doesn’t show the screen for me to login. My brother and me tried methods online and used a HDMI. We got a loading screen that eventually stopped halfway. Then we got another loading screen, beach ball, but nothing worked.

My brother suggested taking out the hardrive or something, and my friend who fixes phones, ipads, everything really said to disconnect the battery and discharge the electricity, reconnect it.

I’m wondering what someone who works on computers often might think my best option is, or if it’s possible for me to at least recover the data?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

First, try a PRAM and SMC reset.

Smc reset:

With the computer plugged in, hold down the left Control + Option + Shift keys and power key for 10 seconds and then let go. You can usually tell it worked if the LED light changes.

PRAM reset:

Turn on the computer and immediately hold down the left Command + Option and keys P and R simultaneously. Keep holding them down until you see the computer shut off and turn back on again.

If this doesn’t work, turn the computer back off and then turn it on while holding down the option key. Select the Macintosh HD hard disk.

If the computer still doesn’t work, turn the computer back off and then turn it on holding down command + R. Try reinstalling a copy of OSX.

Okay. I did try the SMC and pram I believe but I'll try the last two later today with my brother.
