how do i restart my computer if its stuck in grey screen

Start up from your system installation disk by inserting the disk and holding down the "C" key on restart, go to the second page pull down menu to Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the drive on the left and repair it till it runs clear.

I forgot to mention that I've been in the command screen trying to restart it (using command S at start up) and going through the process it states "socket not connected".
How's that working out for you?
