My iPhone 3G touch screen is randomly unresponsive?

Hi I have a problem with my iPhone 3g. Sometimes its hard to unlock it as the right side doesn't seem to respond so well but then other times its fine. My main problem is when I try to enter numbers on my keypad. For instance the other day the number 7,8 and 9 didn't work but then the next day they worked fine??? They have a mind of their own.

I read something about the 'grids' on a digitizer, but why would it respond one day and then the next not at all??

Can anyone suggest what i do? Should i buy a new digitizer? By the way ive opened up my phone and cleaned connections etc and checked pins and all that but still no joy? Please help!!!

I've seen this happen if there is moisture in the phone. Other times it happens is when the digitizer decides to go bad. I would try to change the digitizer first, and see if it still does that. It would be the easier of repairs probably.
