Will Samsung 860 EVO SSD work in MacBook Pro 15" late 2008?

Or what would you suggest?

I mostly do photo editing with PhotoShop. My system is very slow. Would like 500 GB or larger.

Right now running El Capitan but would like to format SSD to Snow Leopard from discs. Is this possible? Would use old HD for backup. Nothing on it I can't be replaced.

Sorry, I'm not very tech-ish.

Thanks KD

Answer this question I have this problem too

Yes, the Samsung 860 EVO SSD will work in your system. But, if you are planning on sticking with El Capitan you’ll need to enable TRIM manually after you’ve updated the OS to the latest maintenance release 10.11.6. Follow this guide How to Enable TRIM on Third Party SSDs in Mac OS X with trimforce

To answer your follow up questions:

Your system is really limited to El Capitan because of the limits of systems RAM, and the newer OS's uses more RAM space. Apple also doesn't support Core 2 Duo CPU based systems as you would need a thunker to support it 32bit to 64bit addressing.

Do take the time to review the migration link, you can selectively restore what you want from your old drive to your new drive.

yes it will as long as you format it in disk utility! it’ll work a lot faster too. you can boot into an online revery by just holding the option key when you hear the chime and connecting to wifi. then it’ll download the newest available for your MacBook

Mando, Is El Capitan a good OS or should I go to the next upgrade?

I also have my Snow Leopard install discs. Could just format the new drive with those and transfer only what I want from the macs drive?

I ask because I have a lot of junk on the computer and not sure how to get rid of it.
