Is this a base station with 2 add-ons or have you tried 3 different phones?

Hi,

What is the make and model number of the phone?

Is it a VOIP service (phone line over internet connection) or a phone service connected to a cable coming into the premises?

If it is a VOIP service where the phones are connected to the internet modem, login to the modem and check the phone settings.

If they appear to be OK and as you have already unplugged the modem, (by this I presume you mean powered it off and back on again to reset it), contact your ISP regarding the problem.

If it is connected directly to a cable coming into the premises what happens when you call your number from another phone e.g. a mobile phone or a neighbour’s phone?

Do you get the engaged signal or the ringtone signal?

If you get the engaged signal, disconnect everything from the phone line in the premises and try calling the number again.

If you still get the engaged signal there is either a line fault or a problem in the telephone exchange. Contact your landline phone service provider’s fault reporting centre.

If you get the ringtone signal, disconnect everything from the phone line in the premises and try calling the number again from a mobile phone and then whilst it is “ringing” short out the line at the phone line socket where the phone was plugged into (now removed for testing) and listen if the ringtone signal stops in the mobile phone.

If the ringtone signal in the calling phone stops when you apply the short across the line, this proves that the line is OK to the premises and that there may be a problem with the cable connection to the base station or a problem in the base station itself, (if you have DECT 6.0 type portable phone equipment that is)

If you still hear the ringtone signal in the calling phone when you apply the short across the line, this means that the service is not reaching the premises perhaps due to an open circuit cable connection between the telephone exchange and your premises etc. Contact your landline phone service provider’s fault reporting centre.
