Blank screen, iTunes still recognises. Apple diagnosed logic board

I had my screen replaced by a third party repair shop about a month or two ago. It all worked fine since then, until it started blacking out on Christmas day. Shaking/hitting screen brought it back to life for shorter and shorter stints until I lost access entirelly. I was overseas and couldn’t back it up. I took it into a Apple store, they replaced the screen but swapped it back because it didn’t work. They’ve said it looks like a fault on the logic board.

I’m back from my travels now and would like to access phone to make up to date back up. iTunes reconises it but I can’t get into it without passcode. I’ve tried using a lightning keyboard but the keyboard doesn’t seem to work on this handset (tested on other, non-broken handsets and keyboard works fine to unlock)

If theres any advice on how to make a temporary fix, or a solution on how to get into the phone to make a back up.

Many thanks in advance.

There are a few different screen related issues that could be occurring here:

  • Backlight Issue - if the backlight driver has failed, then you should be able to see a dim image on the screen when you connect a charger or iTunes enabled computer to the phone. If that’s the case, you should see enough to be able to enter your passcode and then backup your device.
  • LCD Driver Issue - If you can’t seen anything at all (when plugged in - see above) then you may have a damaged LCD driver circuit. This circuit delivers the proper voltages to drive the LCD. Without it, you will have no image.
  • TouchScreen Driver Issue - In addition, the LCD driver IC (Chestnut) also delivers the voltages to drive the Touchscreen.

So you may have anyone or multiple issues here. Other than the backlight issue, there is no way to circumvent the two other problems so if you want to get your data back, you will need to bring (or send) your phone to a micro-soldering repair shop.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I've managed to back it up using the keyboard. Turns out, rather embarrassingly, that I'd swapped out the sim to another handset while overseas. The passcode is linked to the sim, so effectively, I was entering the wrong passcode. I've put my sim in, and the lightening keyboard appears to work well enough to enter my passcode and back up. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate, and despite my embarrassment, I've left this here in the hopes other people may see your reply, and also potentially save them from making the same school boy error I've made.

It's never a good idea to remove content as the whole point is sharing knowledge so that others can learn from our situations...and sometime mistakes. Besides, your phone still has an actual screen issue and the answer addresses this as well.
