MacBook Air won’t turn on after keyboard replacement

I just replaced the keyboard on a MacBook Air A1466 and now it will not power on. The MagSafe charger does not light up when connected. I’ve triple checked all the connections and all the ribbon cables and everything is as it should be.

Now if I remove the I/O cable the MacBook turns on and the indicator on screen shows that it is charging even though the charger still doesn’t light up. A message pops up on the screen that no keyboard is connected and neither the keyboard nor the trackpad works. However the new backlight that I installed does illuminate. When I reconnect the I/O cable the MacBook shuts off.

As I've said I checked the keyboard ribbon cable connection. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You’ll need to inspect the contact pins in the I/O board cable and the board connectors. You may have a bent pin or corrosion. You might also need to replace it MacBook Air 13" (Mid 2013-2017) I/O Board Cable

Well, thats good! That was the easy one ;-}

OK, lets move onto the uppercase cable MacBook Air 13" (Mid 2013-2017) Trackpad Cable this is the cable that connects the trackpad to the logic board. Remember the keyboard connects to the trackpad and keyboard signals. The other possibility is the trackpad is damaged I assume you had a liquid spill which could have killed the trackpad.

After inspecting the I/O cable and seeing no damage or corrosion I replaced it and lo and behold it worked! I suspect that I wasn’t seating the logic board side of the connection completely.

I’m still having the issue with the keyboard and trackpad. The keyboard must be working because it recognizes control+option+shift+power to do an SMC reset. It also recognized command+r but it acts as if no input devices are connected

I didn’t have a liquid spill I had a physically damaged keyboard, but I think you’re right about the upper case cable. I restarted the MacBook in startup manager and both the trackpad and keyboard worked perfectly. I’ve ordered a replacement cable. Thanks for your help.

@Michael Brannon i had the left i/o board and flex cable replaced after spilling milk tea on it but it’s only after the replacement that i’m getting the battery not charging issue

by

@k__mas - Mikes issue turned out to be a bad upper case cable.

by

@danj i'm not aware if there's a difference between the flex and upper case cable but i'll ask the store if they can check the upper case cable for me because they simply said i'd need a new battery because i showed them the "replace battery soon" message in the menu bar
