iPhone 3GS home button won't work after screen repair

I replaced the screen on my friends iPhone 3GS because i have done it several times on my own phone. However, now the home button wont work. There seems to be metal contacts that make contact when the case is screwed together though i am not sure because i am not an expert on how the phone works. How does the button connect to the phone and what could be wrong? I really don't want to leave him without a phone for too long ><. Thanks!

the 2 metal prongs on the back of the home button flex connect with 2 contacts on the top of the dock connector flex, during the process of taking off the display they often get flattened. try inserting something like a flathead screwdriver beneath each prong and gently lift up so they make better contact. Also try cleaning the 2 contact points on the dock and the no.4 flex connections.

If all else fails you will have to remove the digitiser to get to the home button flex to replace that. Usually though if you are GENTLE and lift the prongs up it should return the functionality of the button.

The "prongs" you describe were not on my 3gs. Mine were contact strips on the ribbon. I ended up having to remove my screen 3 times before I figured it out. I ended up taking a small bit of the thin black plastic shielding and folding it over a few times to the shape of the divot into which the ribbon with the contacts sets. I superglued the bit of folded plastic (into the folds too) into place and that was enough to lift the contacts back to where they could make contact again.
