Overheating/short circuit around trackpad ribbon connector ZIF socket

The keyboard and trackpad of my Macbook Pro (early 2015 13” retina) stopped working. I suspect it was due to a problem with the trackpad ribbon cable so I bought this part to try replacing it:

When I connect the cable, the area around the ZIF connector heats up to become very hot.

The same problem happens with the original cable, so I think the cable was not actually the problem.

If I remove the 4 screws which connect the circuit board contain the ZIF connector, then it no longer overheats. I guess this is because the short is being transferred through the MacBook’s case.

Any tips on how to find and fix the cause of this?

Hello, has the problem been solved and if so, in what way did you fix it because I’m having the same problem with my MacBook as well. Thanks

@Nori Nan - Did you replace the trackpad?

by

No, I never solved this, I just disconnected the trackpad use it with an external mouse and keyboard.

@andywaite - Why did you not replace the trackpad?

by

@Dan I wasn’t comfortable with doing such a repair (described as ‘moderate’).

Also, the guide says I would also need to replace the battery, and I’m not sure that’s worth the extra cost for a machine that’s already 5 years old.

Sorry you’re having problems.

In your case your trackpad logic board (the board on the back side of the trackpad) has a short. Time for a new trackpad MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Early 2015) Trackpad

Most likely something was spilled into the trackpad and damaged it.
