Before we go about replacing the battery, could you give us some more information about it? What is it doing or not doing? Did it get wet?

Try the Apple solution first "iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or later

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. When the red slider appears, release the Sleep/Wake button.

Instead of dragging the red slider, press and hold the Home button for six seconds.

If the device does not return to the Home screen, see the steps below to restart.

iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 2.2.1 or earlier

Press and hold the Home button for six seconds.

If the device does not return to the Home screen, see the steps below to restart.

If the iPhone or iPod touch remains unresponsive, try restarting the device:

Restarting iPhone or iPod touch

To turn it off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.

Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone.

To turn iPhone or iPod touch on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

If the iPhone or iPod touch remains unresponsive after trying the above steps or if it is in a different state, such as showing a persistent Apple logo on the display, try resetting the device:

Resetting the iPhone or iPod touch

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds. "

If none of the above works, than you can think about changing the battery. Since you did not give us the generation for your touch, Here are all of them and just pick the one you have and look at the guide. Good Luck.
