Multiple microphones, what are their specific tasks?

iPhones does have multiple microphones. My problem is that i dont know which of the microphones is being used depending on what you’re currently doing with your phone.

This becomes a problem when i get customers saying that people cant hear them in phone calls unless they put the phone on loudspeaker etc.

So can someone please explain which of the microphones are being used in different occations.

There are 3 microphones in the iPhone.

  • The bottom microphone (Lightning Flex) is for Voice Memo and phone calls. The other microphones serve as error cancellation
  • The (top) front microphone (Front Camera/Sensor Flex) is used for FaceTime calls, Siri and selfie videos with the front camera (FCAM). The top back microphone serves as error cancellation
  • The (top) back microphone Power/Volume Button flex, depending in the device) is used for videos with the rear camera (RCAM). The top front microphone serves as error cancellation

If an issue affects more than one microphone, then it could be the Audio Codec IC on the logic board.
