PC Guy - Can't load Os X to new hard drive.

Purchased a Seagate ST9500420AS Media SATA 500gb 7200rpm HD.(Maybe that's my first mistake) When I try to run the OS X install disc, I get past the "language" prompt then get a warning "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer." OS X install disc version is 10.6.3. This disc came with my daughter's newer model MacBook Pro.(mid 2010?)Like I said, I'm new to the Mac environment and woefully under-impressed with my efforts so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The gray installation disks are machine specific. Use your original system disk that came with your machine. If you don't have it, a retail 10.6 system disk sells for about $29. Your hard drive will need to be formatted before you can install a system. The pull down menu appears on the second screen when booting from the disk. Go to Utilities, Disk Utility, select the drive on the left and format it and give it one partition (GUID), then install the system. You could possibly try doing this in Target Mode and then use SuperDuper to clone the drive. http://shirt-pocket.com/

Thanks for the quick response! Now that I know that it's machine specific I did some research & it looks like I may need the 10.5 version disk. Do you think the new HD will operate OK?

You can call Apple and get a replacement 10.5 machine specific system installation disk for $15 + shipping. A retail version on eBay is selling for around $150. Or just buy a retail version of 10.6 for $29. Or wait till Lion comes out this summer

Apple has 10.5.6 for $129 for PPC Macs. That said I agree with mayer, if you have a Intel Mac I would buy at least 10.6 or wait for 10.7.

ralph - is this Apple 10.5.6 something new? Did they start offering it again? Link?

by

No they have had it for some time. I just call the Apple store and tell them I need it for a PPC Mac and they ship 10.5.6 which I then use the updater to 10.5.8.

I've purchased three copies to go with computers I give away or sell.
