Hard drive some times makes a ticking noise

I noticed that my hard drive started making a ticking noise like it was stuck and then everything froze. I took out the battery and restarted it and it is working for now has anyone else had this happen? and if so what can be done to make it not happen again.

If this is new behavior

it's the first sign the drive may be going unfortunately if it's a new box there's some companies who's HD have this undiscovered feature.

when I run verify permissions I get this, permissions differ on "usr/share/derby: should be drwxr-xr-x, they are lrwxr-xr-r and then theres this, waring: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Remote.../ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

can some one tell me what this means please?

I have these same error messages, and we're not alone. According to this discussion forum http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa... they are harmless but i do not think thats the case because everyone thats getting these error messages are having trouble cloning drives and such. I noticed when i got error messages while trying to create a partition with bootcamp.

Is there a way to test the hard drive for bad sectors?

I would use S.M.A.R.T Utility, as i see many people here recommend it.
